When do babies start teething?
All the babies will have teething time during their first three years of life. Appearance of teeth is itself painful for the baby and mother / care giver. For mother’s it is important to learn what are the signs and symptoms for it and how to manage during this phase. Secondly they also need to know what are soothing remedies available to ease the baby from this uncomfortable period. which appear from time to time while completing the whole process of teeth eruption within their first three years of life.
Below we will try to cover how to ease your child and we will try to give our best knowledge in this regard.
Baby first tooth normally appears during their first 4 to 8 months. In this phase greater pressure is exerted on baby gum which may lead to discomfort able situation. During this teething phase mother will observe some signs and symptoms which is discomfort able and irritating for baby. She will understand the process of teething has started. In this situation baby’s gum may be swollen and appears red from where the first teeth will be erupted. This is commonly observed that lower part of gum is effected where very first that is two middle teeth appear. The both two teeth will appear at the same time on gum normally.
It is observed the front teeth appears first from the gums and this is within the age of 6 to 12 months. From here onward within 2 years the remaining teeth of baby appears on both side of the gums. By the time baby attain the age of 3 years will have all 20 teeth with in mouth
American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry spokesperson states “During phase of teeth eruption in Baby it is dependent on many factors which includes baby tolerance level to pain, how thick, compact or dense are gums and the what type of personality is of baby.
Signs and symptoms of Teething
During teething erupting phase in baby, various sign and symptoms are generally observed such as:
- Piercing or biting
- Oozing of saliva from mouth or drooling
- Rubbing of the gum
- Sleep pattern are disturbed due to pain and they are awake most of time.
- Sucking habbit
- Appetite may decrease
- Babies rub their ear
- Irritability is also observed.
- Temperature of mild to moderate intensity.
These above mentioned observation were published and listed by Cleveland Clinic Foundation, USA (Pediatric). Further this is stated by Dr. Hanna, it is not known so far why during teething phenomena baby produces saliva, but this may be due to increase in muscular movement within mouth. This also stimulate chewing / biting tendency in baby which activate salivary gland which produces saliva. Due to excessive increase in release of saliva or drooling may cause rash around the mouth. This biting tendency and gum rubbing, baby is trying to reduce the pressure on gum during the teething phase.
How to keep baby teeth healthy
As we mentioned in above paragraph with in first three years of baby life all 20 teeth will grow. Few of tips how to keep baby teeth healthy and strong are mentioned below in light of guidelines by Cynthia Sherwood. Baby first visit to dentist is when parents celebrate their first birthday
- In baby first visit, Dentist will know about the feeding and cleaning habit.
- Secondly dentist will check is there any early sign of tooth decay.
- Start brushing the infant teeth with clean water which should have required fluoride contents. The fluoride in right / recommended quantity is required for the development of teeth and bone.
- Please ensure kids don’t fall as sleep with bottle or sippy cup in their mouth. This may allow milk or any other liquid to find its place and space to settle in front two teeth. This with the passage of time causes cavities. Which will lead to tooth decay at any stage.
- We have to wait till the infant reaches two year to use pea size fluoride tooth paste to brush the teeth.
Make sure to use recommended quantity of tooth paste which have needed quantity of fluoride. Otherwise if presence of fluoride in excess quantity this may cause brown or white spots on the teeth.
Parents or care giver need to assess is it teething or something else?
It is commonly assumed by most of the people that teething may cause most of the cough, sneezing and crying with in first year of the baby life. Expert says that if baby suffering from fever, or looks ill or suffering from any sickness beside than drooling, crankiness or biting. It is advice to consult baby doctor and let him / her to examine and asses to rule out something more serious rather than ear infection, flu and diarrhea.
With the research overtime and publish studies which states there are no correlation between teething and fever (beyond 102 Fahrenheit), congestion, cough, vomiting, diarrhea or sleep disturbance. Despite many studies still myths are attached and most of the people from all walk of life still believes strongly, teething is responsible for all above mentioned sickness sign and symptoms in baby but that’s not the case.
