It is important for the parent or adult care provider to know how to record body temperature.  Exact temperature recording is important to assess the baby or child having a fever or not.

If you feel the baby body is warm and she is running temperature. It is important for you to know the baby body temperature, what you need is a good Digital Thermometer at home for the baby under 4 years of age, which means from his or her day of birth till attaining the age of four years.

Baby below the age of four take body temperature via underarm is called axillary measurement. Please ensure to use the digital thermometer to check temperature among infant and baby, it is advised to never ever use mercury thermometer to check child temperature.  In case of toddler and infants use the rectal route.

Thermometers at a reasonable price. In Pakistan variety of Digital thermometer is available. A good one is available in price range of Rupees 300 to 500 per piece. Please do avoid and refrain from the use of the adult normal mercurial thermometer in infant and toddler.

The digital thermometer is easy to read and give a faster result that is within 10 seconds to a minute. Body temperature can be obtained by applying thermometer rectally or under armpit when the baby is below the age of 4 years. In the adult baby, over 4 years temperature can be recorded by above recommended two methods as well as applying orally if needed.

If using multi-use thermometer than it is advised to confine it for only one area usage, this is to avoid chances of spreading bacteria which may give rise to infection in infant and young baby.

It is advisable after each use clean it with wet wipe or swab to ensure the cleanliness and dryness.

Normal temperature in infant or babies is referred as 97.5F or 36.4 Centigrade. The given range for assessment of normal temperature may vary slightly.

Fever in the baby is usually assumed when the body temperature is above 100.4F or 38C.

Fever can also be assessed in the baby if they feel hotter on touching their body especially the forehead, neck, stomach or back of their body.

Temperature above normal recorded reflects baby is having a fever, which means the child body is fighting or instigating a battle against infection.  This can be further confirmed by recording body temperature with intervals. This recording also helps the doctor to assess baby condition, and if needed find the suitable treatment option to bring down temperature within normal limit.

If the temperature exceeds this range this means the baby is running a fever, which needs treatment and clinical /physical assessment by physician or pediatrician.

The infant or toddler body temperature is used for the assessment of body fever, but still, this has been observed despite high-grade fever it does not stop a child from playing outside as well taking normal diet. This may not lead to the sign of red alert or alarm bell is not ringing.

In case of fever parents or caregiver are the best to judge, is the baby is seriously ill and does the child need to visit the doctor for treatment and cure.

Please do observe how the baby. looks like and acts. If she is looking well and taking normal fluid intake and feed, then don’t need to call the doctor.
